In this breakout session, Professors Andrea Bien and Catherine O’Connor will return to a question posed in their keynote address about how classroom discussion can be an effective tool for inviting all learners into rich academic discussions with their grade level peers. Their focus will be on the questions K-8 teachers craft to launch discussions in English Language Arts. Specifically, Professors Bien and O’Connor will present an interactive session that looks closely at discussion questions that simultaneously support three dimensions of teaching and learning: 1) Participation; 2) Academic Learning and 3) Equity & Justice. Time for teachers to workshop questions for their own classrooms will be included in this session.
